Muscat: The deterioration of a vehicle, and the death of the accompanying passenger occurred as a result of a display of drifting in Al Dhahirah Governorate.
The Royal Oman Police (ROP) - represented by the General Traffic Directorate - said that Al Dhahirah Governorate Police Command arrested a driver after he drifted his vehicle in the Wilayat of Ibri.
This came through a tweet by the police, which was monitored by “Times of Oman”, in which it explained that the drifting led to the deterioration of the vehicle and the death of an accompanying passenger. The ROP stressed that legal procedures are being completed against the driver.
It is noteworthy that the Omani Traffic Law classifies drifting as a criminal act, which falls under the name of driving a car recklessly, and in a way that constitutes danger or endangers the lives of people.
The penalty for drifting is the arrest of the driver for a period of 48 hours, and the seizure of the vehicle until its driver is brought to trial. The sentences range from 10 days imprisonment to a full year, as well as the imposition of a fine of up to OMR 500, or the equivalent of about 1300 dollars as a maximum. This is in addition to the possibility of withdrawing the driving license for up to a maximum of 3 months.
