Muscat : The UK called on all parties to respect the historic status quo at the Holy Sites of Jerusalem and to cease all provocative actions.
In a statement published by the British government on its website, British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly confirmed that the United Kingdom is a staunch supporter of freedom of religion or belief, and calls for respect for places of worship, expressing his appreciation for Jordan's important role as custodian of the holy places in Jerusalem.
He stated that the United Kingdom condemns the violence of the Israeli police in the Al-Aqsa Mosque, stressing the need for the Israeli forces to ensure that their operations are proportionate and compatible with international law.
The British Foreign Secretary also stressed the need for Israel and Palestine to take steps to fulfill the commitments agreed upon in Sharm el-Sheikh and Aqaba.
"Peace will only be sustainable if the parties recommit to a negotiated settlement, leading to a lasting peace solution," British Foreign Secretary added.
