Muscat: Royal Oman Police (ROP) has announced that its coast guard department recently rescued eight boats and captured one more that was holding illegal substances.
In a statement online, police said, "The coast guard in Musandam towed three boats, which broke down due to engine failure... and captured one boat with an amount of illegal substances."
Meanwhile, in Muscat, "three boats were aided by the coast guard off Seeb and Azaiba, both due to engine failure. They were towed to their respective ports."
The coast guard in northern Sharqiyah also "provided aid to three persons whose boat ran out of fuel. The boat was taken to Qalhat beach".
Finally, an Omani fishing boat, "broke down near Said bin Sultan naval base, and was towed by the south Sharqiyah coast guard to Gizma beach in al Suwaiq."
ROP has asked the owners of boats to exercise caution when alone in the ocean. A statement said, "ROP urges boat owners to perform routine maintenance on their boats. They should also take enough fuel to last them and make sure that they have safety and first-aid kits present before they set out to sea."
