Muscat: Swiss Gianni Infantino has been re-elected as FIFA President until 2027, Oman News Agency, (ONA), said.

The Swiss-Italian Gianni Infantino was re-elected as president of the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) until 2027, by acclamation as there was no candidate against him during the Federation’s General Assembly in Kigali on Thursday.

“It is a great honor for me to preside over FIFA and I promise to continue serving football around the world. May the collective efforts to unite the world continue during my new term”, said Infantino.

The 52-year-old lawyer will lead the global governing body for football for a third term in a situation similar to what happened 4 years ago, after he assumed his position in 2016 to succeed his compatriot Sepp Blatter.

"I love you all", Infantino announced in front of the 211 delegates from member associations in the Rwandan capital where the voting system did not record the number of dissenting votes,

The statute of the federation provides for an end to three periods of 4 years each. Infantino is paving the way for staying until 2031 by announcing in mid-December that he is still “in the first term,” considering that his first term (2016-2019) has not been completed.
