Muscat: Omani Holding Company for Environmental Services ‘be'ah’, recognises exceptional sustainability efforts at the Oman Sustainability Week Awards, held in conjunction with the Oman Sustainability Week 2023 in the Sultanate of Oman. The event took place at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Center (OCEC) under the patronage of His Excellency Salim Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, and was attended by a number of ministers, undersecretaries, CEOs of companies and stakeholders in the field of sustainability.
These awards serve as a commendation to top-performing companies in implementing sustainable practices pertaining to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors, which align with Oman Vision 2040 objectives. The framework, which is based on the internationally recognized GRI standard, was developed in collaboration with the Center for Sustainability and Excellence based in Chicago, Illinois.
The Oman Sustainability Week Awards serve as the launchpad for a week-long initiative that encompasses a vast exhibition, a conference, and diverse field visits. These awards aim to raise awareness about sustainability issues and encourage companies and institutions to incorporate responsible and sustainable practices into their corporate strategies. Additionally, they underscore the significance of dedicating oneself to social and environmental issues to achieve long-term economic growth.
The Oman Sustainability index have been meticulously categorised into various sections, highlighting the country efforts towards sustainable practices in environmental, social, governance and human resources domains. The assessment was based on key performance indicators such as the governance criteria, encompassing the organization vision, anti-corruption policies, sustainability goals, stakeholder engagement and sustainability reporting. The social practices criteria focus on evaluating the organization social impact, contribution to local communities and effective supply chain management. The environmental criteria examine the efficiency of the organization environmental management system, energy consumption, waste management, and emission reduction. Additionally, the human resources criteria assess the organization performance in ensuring employees' health, safety, training and education and providing job opportunities for the community.
In this edition of the Oman Sustainability Week Awards, new categories have been added, including government, Academia, Small businesses in addition to the Medium-Large Businesses category, totalling 19 organizations. An increase of more than 50% from last iteration participation. These organizations have benefited from detailed reports prepared by specialised and experienced assessors in the field of sustainability. The reports provided a thorough evaluation of each participating organization, along with results and grades. Furthermore, the reports included recommendations for areas of improvement and a comprehensive outlook to enhance sustainability strategies in the medium and long terms.
