Muscat: Sri Lanka celebrated the International Women’s Day on 8 March 2023 under the theme ‘She is the Pride of the Nation’, under the patronage of President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

It is dedicated to honour the remarkable achievements of Sri Lankan women.

State Minister of Women and Child Affairs Geetha Kumarasinghe told the media that among the events highlights will be the awarding of four exceptional women who have epitomised the grace and elegance of Sri Lankan women globally and locally, adding that ‘we acknowledge and appreciate the immense contribution of women in Sri Lanka’s development and believe that recognising them will serve as an inspiration to all women in the country.

The event will also recognise 25 district-wise outstanding female entrepreneurs, and they will be presented gifts and certificates.’

All citizens of Sri Lanka who have completed 21 years of age, including women, were granted universal franchise in the year 1931. Madam Sirimavo Bandaranaike was the world's first female prime minister when she became the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka (Dominion of Ceylon) in 1960. Sri Lanka continued to produce several outstanding women leaders. Sri Lankan women have gradually occupied a higher representation in a number of areas of economic, social and cultural life in Sri Lanka today.

Despite the current social and economic challenges, Sri Lankan women continue to exhibit strength and resilience, earning respect and admiration.
