Sohar Aluminium, a Key Player in ESGs implementation locally

Muscat: Sohar Aluminium, that was formed in 2004, and is owned by OQ, TAQA, and Rio Tinto has played a key role in the development and enhancement of the Omani industry sector and the national efforts of economic diversification and advancement of the manufacturing sector in line with Oman’s Vision 2040. Being one of the foremost major local projects, the company implements decades of industry insight, practices, excellence, and transparency not only in its operations, but also in conducting its businesses, projects, and initiatives internally and externally.

A recent example of these world-class practices comes in the form of adopting the Environment, Social and Governance Standards (ESGs). These standards indicate organisations’ behaviour and determine and anticipate their sustainability, future financial performance, and commitment to local social development. The company seeks to adopt these standards by providing sustainable metal products while assessing and implementing mitigation measures to manage emissions at all operational levels. Major elements and projects have been implemented into the design and construction of the company’s facilities by which operations footprint on the environment is maintained and controlled. This is also achieved through accurate and integrated systems to preserve the Environment, Health, and Safety, which is a top priority. Sohar Aluminium seeks to integrate related aspects into the daily work and tasks of its employees and contractors to create and promote a culture of 'Zero' harm. The company’s internal and external audit policies contribute to the assessment of its performance in these aspects due to their significance in the overall sustainability of operations and business.

Sohar Aluminium implements high working standards, and maintains excellent relations with its stakeholders, all the while committing to transparent policies and moral responsibilities. The Human Rights Policy is one example of its efforts in governing the way it treats its people internally and extends the same to external suppliers and contractors. In addition to this, the company always seeks to enhance equal opportunities for the workforce, as well as continuously reviews its contracts to incorporate rigorous requirements for providing welfare for its contracted resources.

With a clear ambition to be a committed partner of the community and a responsible corporate citizen, Sohar Aluminium adopts a vibrant Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme through which it executes sustainable social projects and initiatives aimed at serving members of the society in North Al Batinah Governorate and across the Sultanate of Oman. Its social responsibility framework focuses on supporting vital sectors such as education and health, in addition to supporting non-profit civil and community associations and institutions. Jusoor Foundation, which the company has contributed to establishing and finances its community projects and initiatives, is considered one of the most prominent social responsibility institutions in the Sultanate of Oman.

As a testament to its successful journey, Sohar Aluminium has been recognised with several local, regional and international awards across various sectors from employee welfare to operational excellence to Health & Safety and Community support. One of the most recent and proud recognitions is winning His Majesty’s Industrial Excellence Award 2021.
