Muscat: Past champions and passionate paddlers have all descended to the Sultanate of Oman in large numbers as the 2023 World Veteran Table Tennis Championships begins at the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre (OCEC) from Sunday.
The one-week event that will conclude on 21 January will be inaugurated by His Highness Sayyid Fahar bin Fatik Al Said in the presence of Petra Sorling, ITTF President, Khalil Al Muhannadi, president of Asian Table Tennis Union, Arabian and Qatar TT associations and other dignitaries.
A brief ceremony will precede the opening day’s action on Monday. As many as 1,600 participants from 69 nations have arrived in Muscat over the past few days.
Oman Table Tennis Association (OTTA) in coordination with International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) and under supervision of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, have made great efforts to ensure the success of the event, which is being held in the Sultanate of Oman for the first time.
The participating paddlers began their warm up sessions at the venue on Saturday and will continue on Sunday.
The matches will be played daily from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm. Eleven categories of age-groups are included with the youngest age-group starting from the age of 40 and going above 90. A total of 44 world titles are to be won at the championships.
Three exhibition halls at the OCEC have been set up to accommodate 130 tables for the event.
As many as 100 umpires will be officiating and will include referees from the Sultanate of Oman.
