Oman’s winter tourism season is currently underway, and as visitors come to the country to escape the harsh weather back home, hotels in the country are operating at high occupancy levels. An increasing number of visitors from colder parts of the world looking to escape the harsh winter and celebrate the festive season come to Oman. Those who come from the colder countries look forward to the pleasant weather. For them this is summer-like weather and hence very pleasant. With temperatures plummeting further here, tourists who visit the Sultanate to enjoy the weather at this time of the year are in for a very pleasant stay.
Jabal Shams recently recorded the lowest temperature in the Sultanate of Oman. Jabal Shams station in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate recorded - 0.4 degrees Celsius, followed by Saiq station in South Al Sharqiyah Governorate with 6.6 degrees Celsius and Al Mazyona station in Dhofar Governorate with 10.6 degrees Celsius.
Located in Wilayat Al Hamra, Al Dhakilya region, Jabal Shams is the highest peak in Oman and is located at about 3000 feet above the sea level and is a part of the Al Hajar Mountains range.
The trip to Jabal Shams starts with a route which overlooks the scattered villages and farms underneath. Sometimes in winter, the mountain is covered with a beautiful veil of snow making it a great place to enjoy the chillness.
A trip to Jabal Shams requires a four wheel drive. Take the Nizwa road from the Al Sahwa roundabout, then take the road to Wilayat Al Hamra and from there turn left to Wadi Al Goul where you will see the mountain route. There are signs that will guide you all along the way.
