Madrid: The defeat against Morocco in the penalty shootout has triggered a new cycle for the Spain national football team and the first casualty after the fiasco at the Qatar 2022 World Cup has been Luis Enrique.
The Asturian coach has been dismissed to bring an end to his project, based on young players, which has not been able to enjoy success at major tournaments, the Spanish MARCA newspaper reported.
Luis de la Fuente is the new Spain national team coach. The Royal Spanish Football Federation has opted to give De la Fuente the job, seeing him complete his progression through the ranks in house.
He has won the Under-19 European Championship, the Under-21 Euros, the Mediterranean Games in 2018 and was an Olympic silver medalist in Tokyo.
De la Fuente was an Athletic Club player, with whom he won two league titles in the early 1980s.
Luis de la Fuente has been in charge of most of the players who are part of the group that Luis Enrique has had in his two stages as Spanish coach. Ferran Torres, Pedri, Gavi, Ansu Fati, Eric Garcia and others have developed under the new first-team coach.
