Muscat: An international medical conference highlighting treatment of blood cancers and bone marrow transplant was recently held in Muscat.
Organised by the Muscat Family Physicians Group in association with Global Treatment Services, two experts from Sparsh Hospitals, Bengaluru, India, addressed the large gathering.
Dr. Sunil Udhire, consultant hematology, paediatric oncology and bone marrow transplant physician presented 20 cases for discussion at the conference. The cases included benign hematological disorders like thalassemia, sickle cell anemia and haemophilia. Udhire also discussed cases on blood cancers like leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma and hemoglobinopathies.
Dr. Mahesh Rajshekhariah, consultant hematology and bone marrow transplant physician, talked about the conditions when a patient has to be referred for bone marrow transplant.
He discussed in details about the patient, preparation, procedure, post-transplant care and complications. Rajshekhariah also spoke about patients who will need autologous, allogenic or Haplo transplant of stem cells.
“It’s a teamwork. Many doctors are involved in deciding the treatment after discussing it. This reduces errors / complications to the minimum and gives best results,” said both the speakers.
The conference was attended by doctors, oncologists, hematologists, paediatricians, internists and family physicians. Dr Sanjay Dalal, founder of Muscat Family Physicians’ Group thanked the international speakers for sharing their experience/expertise.
