OMR 3,000 fine imposed on 3 expats for illegally selling tobacco in Oman

Muscat: An administrative fine of OMR 3,000 was imposed on three expats for selling non-smoking, chewing tobacco in the Wilayat of Barka, South Al Batinah Governorate.

The Consumer Protection Department in South Al Batinah Governorate in Barka, represented by the Inspection and Market Control Department, in cooperation with the Joint Team for Non-smoked Tobacco Control, managed to arrest three expatriate workers.

Reports were received from a number of consumers about Asian nationality workers selling non-smoking, chewing tobacco in one of the sites. After monitoring and investigation, the judicial control officers, with the assistance of the Joint Team for the Control of Non-smoked Tobacco, were able to control the workers while they were trading and selling.

1, 021 bags were seized in their possession, where 466 bags of “Afzal” tobacco and 275 bags of banned spice were seized, in addition to 280 types of prohibited cigarettes.

Accordingly, the necessary legal measures were taken and the seizures were investigated by the administration in preparation for their destruction. An administrative fine of OMR 3, 000 was imposed in accordance with Resolution No. (301/2016) regarding the prohibition of the circulation of non-smoking, chewing tobacco in any form.

The imposition of such penalties and fines comes to deter anyone who atempts to violate the rights of consumers, harm their health and safety, and preserve all their rights guaranteed to them in accordance with the provisions of the law for a society free from negative phenomena that have an impact on individuals and society.
