Muscat: Oman coach Pim Verbeek has called up 26 players for training camps ahead of the 23rd Gulf Cup Football Championship to be oranised in Qatar later this month.

According to information received from the Oman Football Association (OFA) on Wednesday, Oman’s Dutch coach Verbeek has announced a list of 26 probables who will now undergo training camps both at home and abroad in preparation for the Gulf Cup.

The 23rd edition of the Gulf Cup is scheduled to take place in the Qatari capital of Doha from December 22, 2017 to January 8, 2018.

Interestingly, Pim Verbeek’s 26-probables list is dominated by Suwaiq with as many as eight players from the club being picked for national duty.

The list includes four players from Dhofar, three from Al Nasr and two each from Saham, Al Shabab and Al Nahda with Al Mudhaibi, Fanja and Oman being represented by one player each.

The list includes just two professional players who are currently playing abroad - Nadir Awadh of Al Shahaniya (Qatar) and Ahmed Mubarak ‘Kanu’ of Al Mesaimeer (Qatar).

In the Gulf Cup, 2009 champions Oman are placed in Group A along with hosts Qatar, Iraq and Yemen.

Kuwait ban lifted

Meanwhile, the participation of Kuwait, a record ten-time winners, was cleared on Wednesday when FIFA lifted a ban on the country’s football association.

According to agency reports, FIFA said in a statement that the lifting of the ban followed official confirmation “that the Kuwait Parliament has adopted a new Sports Law of Kuwait, which replaces all the previous ones and has been amended in order to be fully compliant with the FIFA Statutes and requirements.”

While Kuwait will now be placed in Group B of the Gulf Cup, the other three nations - Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the UAE, in the group have so far not confirmed their participation.
