Muscat: Khoula Hospital succeeded in performing a reconstructive operation for a patient with breast cancer, using the microscopic flaps surgery technique, by taking tissues from the abdomen and forming them to form a new breast after the total mastectomy of the patient, the first of its kind in the Sultanate of Oman.

The operation was carried out by a specialized microsurgery team headed by Dr. Sheikhan Al-Hashemi - a consultant in the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Burn Surgery at Khoula Hospital, and the operation was discharged in less than a week.

Dr. Sheikhan said that the presence of such reconstructive operations in the Sultanate of Oman is a quantum leap in breast reconstruction. Flap prosthesis surgery using DEIP is the most modern and advanced technique, and it is one of the advanced surgical forms, and it is performed by a select group of certified microsurgical surgeons, and requires training and experience to perform these operations successfully and safely.

He added: Khoula Hospital will activate a specialized clinic for breast restoration cases, as the flap technology is a remarkable development in the field of technology and medical techniques during surgery, unlike traditional breast reconstruction methods, and uses skin and fatty tissues in the abdomen or any other area of the body, and is transferred with the blood vessels to the mastectomy site are carefully reconnected under a surgical microscope.
