Duqm economic zone gets waste management facility

Muscat: A brand new waste management facility for Duqm’s economic zone opened yesterday.
The Duqm Integrated Waste Management Facility has an estimated capacity to of 300 tonnes of waste a day, and is spread over a total area of 4,332,727 square metres.
According to a statement by the Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (Be’ah), “The inauguration of the Duqm Integrated Waste Management Facility comes in collaboration with SEZAD, as part of Be’ah’s efforts toward managing waste in the most advanced and sustainable manner.”
Second largest in Oman
The Duqm facility is considered the second largest integrated Facility in the Sultanate after Sohar Integrated Facility. The facility is estimated to receive 300 tonnes of waste per day.
“The Duqm Integrated Waste Management Facility has a total area of 4,332,727 square meters,” the statement added.
A spokesperson from Be’ah said, “The Duqm Integrated Waste Management Facility (DIWMF) consists of two facilities, one is for the treatment, storage and disposal of MSW, C&D waste, E-waste, tires, as well as general waste.
Industrial waste
“The second facility is to be utilised for the treatment, storage and disposal of industrial waste,” the spokesperson added.
Duqm is meant to become a hub for heavy industries, as stated by Dr. Ismail Al Balushi, Deputy CEO of the Special Economic Zone Authority.
During the recent opening of a Sebacic acid refinery, he said that the authority hopes to see more projects in the heavy industry zone in the coming years.
The site is approximately 30 km away from Duqm Port and the first phase of the municipal solid waste cell project has a total capacity of approximately “750,000 cubic metres,” while the Industrial Waste Landfill Cell has a total capacity of “50,000 cubic meters,” according to Beah’s statement.
The spokesperson from Beáh added, “The Duqm Integrated Waste Management Facility (DIWMF) is located within the Special Economic Zone Authority Duqm (SEZAD) area in Wilayat of Duqm.”
