Oman sees rise in water and electricity generation

Muscat: Oman’s electricity and water production grew by 1.6 per cent and 6 per cent, respectively at the end of the first half of this year compared to last year.

“The total electricity generation in the Sultanate of Oman until the end of June 2022 increased by 1.6 per cent to 20,100 gigawatts per hour,” according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).

The governorate of Dhofar recorded an increase of 9.2 per cent in total generation to reach 2,100 gigawatts per hour, and the governorates of North and South Al Batinah and Al Dhahirah recorded an increase in the total electricity generation by 6.5 per cent to 12,925 gigawatts per hour.

For Oman’s net electricity generation until the end of June 2022, which includes the purchases of the Oman Energy and Water Procurement Company and the purchases by the Rural Areas Electricity Company by regions amounted to 19,478 gigawatts per hour, an increase of 1.7 per cent.

The largest amount of net electricity generation came in the Governorate of Dhofar, with an increase of 9.5 per cent to reach 1,999 gigawatts per hour. The governorates of North and South Al Batinah and Al Dhahirah also recorded an increase in net electricity production by 6.8 per cent to reach 12,512 gigawatts per hour.

On the other hand, the total amount of water produced in the Sultanate of Oman witnessed an increase of 6 per cent to reach 251.70 cubic metres until the end of June 2022, as the governorates of Dhofar and Muscat recorded an increase in water production by 8.9 per cent and 8.5 per cent, respectively, compared to the same period last year in 2021.
