Muscat: The Grand Mufti of the Sultanate of Oman has urged people to offer assistance to Pakistan and Sudan to mitigate the effects of the floods in both the nations.
His Eminence Sheikh Ahmed bin Hamad Al Khalili, Grand Mufti of Oman, said in a tweet through his personal account: “We have been afflicted by what has befallen our brothers in some Islamic countries, such as Pakistan and Sudan from the pandemics that have affected cities and villages and a lot of money and lives.
“We call on everyone to hasten to extend a helping hand to them. However, they have our kind sympathy for what has befallen them, and we sincerely pray to God to bring them security, peace and tranquility.”
The UN Chief, Antonio Guterres, has also urged the world to come to Pakistan’s aid and has appealed to them to help the tens of millions affected by the disaster. At least 1,136 people have died so far and roads, crops, homes and bridges washed away across the country.
Yesterday, the country’s Climate Change Minister Sherry Rehman described the situation as a “climate-induced humanitarian disaster of epic proportions.”
This year’s flood is comparable to the that of 2010 - the severest in Pakistan’s history - which left more than 2,000 people dead.
Guterres said: “Let’s stop sleepwalking towards the destruction of our planet by climate change.”
