First edition of Governorates marathon unveiled

Salalah: The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth and Sabco Sports company have outlined the first edition of “Governorates Marathon”—which reflects the ministry’s keenness in encouraging the society to take up this sport and make it a ‘health and life style’.

The details were unveiled during a briefing held on Wednesday at Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex for Culture and Entertainment. The briefing was attended by officials, media personnel and members of the public interested in the sector of sports and youth.

The Governorates Marathon is being organized in implementation of a decision issued by HH Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham Al Said, Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth. He issued instructions to form the supervising committee tasked with developing “a professional tourist sport” and establish such a popular sports extravaganza in all governorates of the Sultanate of Oman. This comes within the framework of an envisaged local competition that responds to the aspirations of Omani runners and contributes to the goals of Oman Vision 2040.

Mohammed Ahmed Al A’amri, Director General of Sports Activities at the Ministry, gave a speech in which he declared that “the Governorates Marathon will kick off for the first time in the Sultanate of Oman.

He noted that, besides being a local sports event, the Governorates Marathon will highlight Oman as a sports tourism destination.

The logo of the Governorates Marathon was screened during a visual display alongside the logo of Oman Broadband company, sponsor of the first edition of the event. Related contracts were signed by the three parties of the sports project.
