Oman Sailing Championship 2022 start date rescheduled due to heavy rains

Muscat: Due to a period of prolonged heavy rains across the country, the Oman Sailing Championship 2022, originally scheduled to begin in Sur on 17 July 2022, has been rescheduled and will now take place from 24-27 July.

Approximately 75 sailors from Oman Sail’s sailing schools at Al Mouj Muscat, Marina Bandar Al Rowdha, Mussanah and Sur will compete for a place in the Oman National Team for international events.

Racing will begin on 24 July 2022 and over four days, sailors in Optimist, Diam24, ILCA 4, ILCA 6, ILCA 7 and iQFOiL classes, along with athletes from the Sail Free programme competing in the RS Venture class for the first time in championship history, will put their training to the test to claim gold, silver, and bronze medals, while impressing coaches from Oman Sail.

Said Al Araimi, Sur Sailing School Manager, said, “The recent rains have given us little choice but to delay the start of the championship in the interests of the safety of our sailors and the local community. We still anticipate a high quality event at the Oman Sailing Championship, which gives us an exciting opportunity to gauge the progress of the talented sailors together from our four sailing schools and select the top performers for forthcoming international competition."

Organised by Oman Sail and held under the authority of the Oman Maritime Sports Committee, there will be 20 races and no more than five each day in the iQFOiL competition and 12 with a maximum of three in all other classes. The top three sailors in each class will receive prizes and be considered to be part of the Oman National Team for upcoming national, regional and international competition.
