Thousands of new immigration officers, a crackdown on border security, and the wall with Mexico: just some of what Donald Trump is asking for in a new immigration wish list presented to Congress on Sunday (October 8).
Trump wants the ideas included in any immigration deal, as Congress mulls the future of nearly 800,000 young people known as Dreamers brought illegally to the U.S. as children.
But while the list is likely to fire up the president's nationalist base, for Democrats its a non-starter.
Party leaders issuing a statement saying, "The administration can't be serious about...helping the Dreamers if they begin with a list that is anathema to the Dreamers."
Trump ended the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals - or DACA - programme last month, leaving hundreds of thousands of young undocumented immigrants in limbo. He's promised to help protect the so-called Dreamers, giving Congress six months to come up with a fix. But analysts say the new hardline demands will make it tough to strike a deal that both sides can agree on, with provisions to crackdown on the flow of unaccompanied minors to the U.S. and deny federal grants to so-called sanctuary cities that protect some illegal immigrants.
Trump has failed to deliver even a single major legislative win after nine months in office. Analysts say his immigration list isn't likely to get him any closer to victory, meaning Dreamers across the U.S. are facing an increasingly uncertain future.
