Oman govt employee who embezzled orphans' funds gets 5 years in jail

Muscat: A government employee in the Sultanate of Oman was fined about OMR 1.2 million and imprisoned for five years for embezzling 1.2 million from orphans' and minors' money.

The State’s Financial and Administrative Audit Institution (SAI) said in its annual report that the head of the inheritance department embezzling the money of orphans and minors and misusing his position to achieve his personal benefits, by receiving cash, and instead of depositing it in the court’s account, he unjustly used it for his personal purpose.

According to the report, the accused was convicted of embezzlement and imprisoned for five years and fined about OMR1.2 million and obligated to return the seized sum estimated at OMR 1.2 million.

SAI also said that the employee was also convicted of money laundering and imprisoned for five years; fined OMR 50,000; dismissal from his job, and further banned from holding public jobs.
