Muscat: Episode IX of Star Wars will be called ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ and is expected to release by Christmas 2019.

The name was announced in a new teaser released by Disney, which shows Rey, played by Daisy Ridley, finally try to harness the powers of the force following the lessons taught to her by Luke Skywalker, who became her teacher in The Last Jedi, before he became one with the Force.

The teaser opens with Rey in the middle of a desert, unsheathing her lightsabre to face an oncoming craft, while Luke Skywalker speaks to her from the beyond saying: “we’ve passed on all we know. A thousand generations live in you now. But this is your fight.”

Rey then lights up her weapon, turns her back to the oncoming craft, and does a somersault, enabling her to land on the roof of the vehicle.

The teaser also features Kylo Ren, who has become the Supreme Leader of the First Order following his assassination of Snoke. Ren is shown to have become even angrier, using that rage to help him eliminate the soldiers who pursue him, having now made a new design for his helmet.

The teaser also features ex-Stormtrooper Finn and Resistance Captain Poe Dameron, as well as the much-loved droid BB8.

But crucially for Star Wars fans, another beloved figure has returned: Lando Calrissian, the former governor of Cloud City who was last seen in the original trilogy, is seen piloting the Millennium Falcon alongside Chewbacca.

“We will always be with you,” says Luke, as Rey hugs Leia Skywalker, who is portrayed by the late Carrie Fisher. Fisher had filmed some Star Wars scenes before she passed away, and her family has given Disney permission to use these scenes.

The teaser is a whirlwind of emotions, designed to make the fans remember the enormity of the franchise: a shot featuring Rey, Poe, Finn, C3P0, Chewbacca and BB8 then pans to a vast ocean, where the wreckage of the dreaded Death Star rises.

But the kicker has been left for the very end: as the screen fades to black, the cackle of the evil emperor Palpatine is heard – proof that nothing is ever truly gone.
