Muscat: In an effort to raise awareness about cancer, teenagers from ABA Oman International School organised a walkathon on February 3.

The ‘walk for a cause’ was organised by student-led charity  Teens Giving Back (TGB) and  also marked the World Cancer Day which falls on February 4.

The TGB initiative began in 2011 with the intention to improve the welfare of the community.

TGB aims to support the Oman Cancer Association (OCA) and the Paul Uche Foundation through bake sales, fundraisers, spirit days, festivals, and the sale of handmade cards.

This year, the walkathon was organised in honour of Paul Uche, an ABA graduate from the class of 2009, who was diagnosed with Myeloid Leukaemia and died in 2014.

After his passing, Paul’s family started a foundation in his name in Nigeria for the treatment of cancer patients. Autobiographical anecdotes of Paul’s brave battle with cancer is published in his book titled ‘Switching Lanes: And Other Stories’.

Muhammad Ahsan Kalam, the senior student leader of Teens Giving Back expressed, “We as global citizens in an international school, feel that it is our duty to give back to society and help the local community in whatever way we can.

TGB’s efforts have helped us learn and grow to be caring and compassionate individuals and serve a purpose in life through our various fund raising activities for a good cause.”

“The TGB team at ABA is dedicated to helping the Omani and International community by giving back through our hard work that will certainly continue for years to come. A little step goes a long way in making a big difference and we hope to set an example through our actions to inspire all to do the same,” stated Dr. Bina Philip, high school faculty and supervisor for TGB at ABA.

ABA Oman International School is a not-for-profit IB Continuum School in Muscat, Oman providing international education of the highest quality in an intercultural environment.
