Royal Opera House Muscat to present Anastasia from Belarus

Muscat: The Royal Opera House Muscat is delighted to present Anastasia from the acclaimed National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theatre.

Inspired by the legendary love story of a prince and a princess in times long past, the ballet portrays a snapshot of the cultural history of Belarus.

Drama, betrayal, masterfully choreographed battles and magnificent court scenes are the backdrop for this story of loyalty and love.

Anastasia opens the ballet with a scene depicting her as a young girl falling in love for the first time and sharing her first kiss with Mikhail, a young man who is on the cusp of adventure. He leaves her bereft and heartbroken.

Years later, Anastasia marries Prince Simeon and Mikhail reappears at court after a long time at war and realises his love and loss. Time passes again and the fighting spills over into the court, Mikhail is embroiled in the attack and the king, Simeon is killed.

Anastasia is taken prisoner by the warlord and given to Mikhail as spoils of war. He, out of love and pity, gives her her freedom. Anastasia raises an army and takes back her country. Mikhail fights on her side finally.

The strong tradition of ballet in Belarus has been evolving progressively since the nineteenth century and is now one of the finest in the world.

The Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus is a landmark in the country, as well as on the international landscape. Anastasia premiered in October 2018 and reflects the National Bolshoi Theatre’s ongoing commitment to the creation of new works in the classical tradition.

All visits to the opera house are conducted under the guidelines of the Supreme Committee responsible for measures to tackle the development of Covid-19.

Social distancing is maintained throughout the building and the wearing of facemasks is mandatory.
