Muscat: With the announcement of the unification of electricity tariffs for the residential category for Omanis and residents, expats will witness a decrease in the electricity bill in the Sultanate of Oman.

The Authority for Public Services Regulation (APSR) recently announced the results of the tariff review and electricity sector governance in January 2022, which among its decisions was to unify the electricity consumption segments for all residential category accounts (citizens and expats).

Consequently, the value of the electricity consumption tariff for the residential category for the year 2022 was determined to be 14 baisas per kilowatt for resident and citizens, for a monthly consumption that ranges between 0 to 4000 kilowatts, instead of the tariff value being 19 baisas per kilowatt for expatriates.

Thus, for example, if a resident consumes 1,000 kilowatts per month with a bill of OMR19, the value of the bill with the new tariff will become OMR 14 only.

The authority also announced the expansion of the time range of the subsidy redirection programme for the residential category (lifting electricity subsidies) from five years to ten years, with an increase in the tariff at a rate not exceeding 2 baisas annually.

The authority said in a statement that these policies aim to achieve the programme of redirecting electricity subsidies to the eligible categories, which is part of the medium-term financial balance plan (2020-2024).
