Muscat: Sultan Qaboos comprehensive Cancer Care and Research Centre launched the CyberKnifeS7 radiosurgery device, which is the first of its kind in the region, and is used to treat brain, lung, prostate and other micro-tumours in a few sessions ranging from one to five sessions as a maximum.
“The Sultan Qaboos comprehensive Cancer Care and Research Centre conducts the first operation to treat cancerous tumours through the 'CyberKnifeS7' radiosurgery device, which is the first of its kind in the region,” Oman News Agency, ONA, said.
Dr Zahid bin Abdullah Al-Mandhari, Head of the Radiotherapy Department, points out that the device system is characterised by motion synchronisation technology that allows accurate tracking of the tumour location with the patient's breathing and movement throughout the treatment session.
The robot detects the tumour and ensures that the radiation beam is delivered with pinpoint accuracy to preserve as much healthy tissue surrounding the tumour as possible and maintain the basic functions of the affected organ,
