Royal Hospital gets advanced cancer treatment device

MuscatThe Royal Hospital (RH), represented by the General Surgery Department, inaugurated the first advanced device for the treatment of cancerous tumours in the Sultanate of Oman.

The machine is a heated chemotherapy infusion device, which is one of the most important scientific discoveries that eliminate cancer cells in the abdominal cavity after tumor removal operations.

“The device is the first-of-its-kind in the Sultanate of Oman. It replaces the traditional method of injecting chemical drugs into the abdominal cavity after the operations of removing cancerous tumours,” said Dr. Rashid Mohammed Al Alawi, Head of the General Surgery Department at RH.

In a statement to Oman News Agency ONA, Dr Rashid pointed out that the device will contribute to the treatment of cancerous tumours in many parts of the body, especially colon, ovarian, and appendix tumors and that it can be used for dozens of cancer cases every month.

Meanwhile, Dr. Aamid Khamis Al Araimi, Director of the Department of Surgery at RH, told ONA that as many as 13,821 surgeries were conducted by different departments of the Royal Hospital. The departments included gastrointestinal surgery, liver surgery, glands surgery, breast surgery, obstetrics surgery, gynecology surgery, urology surgery, dental surgery, pediatric surgery and vascular surgery, he added.

The cases varied between critical and stable, said Dr. Aamid, noting that this achievement coincided with the exceptional period of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic outbreak and its emergent strains. The performance confirms the hospital’s readiness to handle various surgical cases in a way that ensures the safety of patients in accordance with the highest approved standards, he explained.
