Omantel builds advanced network to improve national weather forecasting

Muscat: Oman Telecommunications Company (Omantel), the Sultanate’s leading provider of integrated telecommunication services, has joined hands with the Public Authority for Civil Aviation (PACA) to provide an advanced network connectivity for a series of weather monitoring radar stations currently being deployed across the Sultanate, enabling meteorologists to analyse real-time weather data from the PACA Meteorological Centre located at Muscat International Airport.
The real-time connectivity solution provided by Omantel enables PACA to improve early warning detection of developing weather systems, and give the relevant authorities advanced warning of any potentially severe weather events as early as possible, allowing for faster response times and improved levels of readiness.
The new weather radar stations will be positioned across the country at sites including Muscat, Salalah, Ras Al Hadd, Duqm and Fuhod and will be continuously operated and maintained by PACA. The radar network will enable PACA to monitor in real-time the latest meteorological data includingwind speed and direction, precipitation and barometric trends in order to predict and report on forecast weather conditions. The new network provided by Omantel will link the 5 weather radar stations through the high performance Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) network solution.
Commenting on the collaboration, Omantel’s Vice-President, Corporate, Todd M. Dick said, “Given our geographical location and topography, here in Oman we are sometimes susceptible to weather systems bringing heavy rains and tropical storms. In the event of such weather it is crucial that the concerned authorities have up-to-date information as early as possible so they can act accordingly. Omantel’s advanced network connectivity at the PACA monitoring stations will ensure that the most accurate and up-to-date information can be fed to the appropriate authorities seamlessly and instantaneous. This project is yet another example of the high level of reliability and security that Omantel network enjoys, given the sensitivity of the data that will be transferred through the network.”
“As part of our new strategy ‘Omantel 3.0’, we endeavour to be the digital partner for public and private sector organisations across the nation. We pride ourselves on providing the highest quality service and innovative solutions for our trusted partners. The fact that Omantel is the chosen partner for authorities such as the PACA is a true reflection of the confidence and trust placed in the company by the market, as well as our leadership position in the sector. We have worked hard to establish that trust and look forward to continuing to provide innovative and customised services to the most prominent brands and entities in the country,” Todd added.
It is worth mentioning that Omantel is providing fixed telecommunications and advanced connectivity solutions to the whole aviation sector in the Sultanate, which proves that Omantel solutions enjoy a high level speed, trust, and security that such a vital sector requires.
