Liverpool and Man City draw in thriller, Chelsea top Premier League standings
Chelsea beat Southampton 3-1

London: Chelsea go into the international break as Premier League leaders after a 3-1 win over Southampton on Saturday, while Liverpool and Manchester City drew 2-2 in a thriller at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

City dominated the first half against a slightly lethargic Liverpool and Phil Foden and Kevin de Bruyne had chances to open the scoring, but they failed to take them and the game was goalless at the break.

Sadio Mane made City pay for their profligacy when slipped though by Mohamed Salah in the 59th minute, but Foden got it right with a ruthless finish 10 minutes later to make it 1-1.

It was turning into an end-to-end game and Liverpool were again in front when Salah received the ball out wide, before beating several defenders and slamming home from a tight angle.

This time it was de Bruyne who pulled the visitors level with a curling left-foot shot that took a deflection on its way into the net, and despite scares at both ends, it stayed that way until the final whistle.

Aston Villa defender Matt Targett's 71st minute own goal gave Tottenham a vital win after a run of three consecutive league defeats. Targett's error came just minutes after Ollie Watkins' 67th minute strike had canceled out Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's 27th minute opener for Spurs and caused murmurs of discontent around the ground.

Yoane Wissa scored with the last kick of the game to keep Brentford's dream start to the season alive and give them a 2-1 win away to West Ham.

The side from south-west London had taken the lead in the London Stadium with Bryan Mbeumo's 20th minute goal to reward their effective high press. West Ham evened things up when Jarrod Bowen's 81st minute half-volley looked to have given his side a draw they deserved on the balance of play, before Wissa smacked home after Lukas Fabianski had parried a header.

Leicester City's irregular start to the season continued as they surrendered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 away to Crystal Palace.

The Foxes had gone 2-0 up in the first half through Kelechi Iheanacho and Jamie Vardy, but substitutes Michael Olise and Jeffrey Schlupp (who was part of Leicester's title-winning squad in 2016) ensured the spoils were shared.

The pressure is mounting on Manchester United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after his side were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Everton on Saturday.

Anthony Martial put United ahead in the 43rd minute, only for Andros Townsend to make it 1-1 in the 65th minute, and Yerry Mina almost won it for Rafa Benitez's men in injury-time only for his goal to be ruled out for offside.

Chelsea recovered from defeats against Manchester City and Juventus with a 3-1 win at home to Southampton with goals from Trevoh Chalobah, Timo Werner and Ben Chilwell.

James Ward-Prowse had equalized from the penalty spot for Southampton, but his red card on 77 minutes allowed Chelsea to seal the win in the closing minutes.

Diego Llorente's 18th minute goal gave Leeds United their first win of the season as they defeated Watford 1-0 at Elland Road in a result that would cost Watford coach Xisco Munoz his job, while Burnley and Norwich drew 0-0 in a game between the bottom two to end Norwich's six-game losing streak, but still leave both sides looking for their first win of the season.

Burnley do, however, climb above Newcastle, who lost 2-1 away to Wolves, for whom Hwang Hee-chan scored their first two goals at home this campaign.

Arsenal escaped with a point from their visit to Brighton after the home side peppered the Arsenal goal with 21 shots, but only managed to get two on target and those were dealt with excellently by Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale.
