Pact to develop issuance of standardisation tokens inked

MUSCAT: The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion on Tuesday signed an agreement with the GCC Standardisation Organisation (GSO) to operate and develop the issuance of standardisation tokens—the ‘Energy Efficiency Label (EEL)’.

The agreement aims to regulate the process of monitoring, based on efficiency criteria, and to deal directly with economic operators of cooling systems. It also seeks to engage independent organisations as third parties to determine products that meet standards of the local Omani market.

The process involves using the electronic platform of Energy Efficiency Label’s issuing system and the platform of Recruitment Management System (RMS) representing assessment parties tasked with sorting out applications for compatibility.

Besides label EEL issuing and renewal services, the agreement covers customs clearance mechanisms and coordination among parties that benefit from the service.

The agreement enhances the Sultanate’s approach for economic and environmental sustainability. The overall objective is to promote and rationalise energy consumption in the Sultanate.

On the sidelines of the signing ceremony, the platform of Oman Energy Efficiency Label for air conditioners was launched, which will help provide electronic services. As many as 900 home air conditioning system products are registered at the Omani platform.

The agreement was signed by Dr Saleh Said Massan, Commerce and Industry Under-Secretary, and Saud Nassir Al Khusaibi, Chairman of GSO.
