Planning to visit Al Jabal Al Akhdar? Some dos and don'ts
A pleasant climate and trekking, climbing and hiking opportunities it offers makes Al Jabal Al Akhdar a popular destination

Muscat: With tourism picking up in Al Jabal Al Akhdar, travellers are advised to ensure their vehicles are well maintained, and understand the terrain and the roads to avoid traffic accidents.

A pleasant climate and trekking, climbing and hiking opportunities it offers makes Al Jabal Al Akhdar a popular holiday destination.

Eyes on the road

"Driving along mountainous roads requires focus and technique," said Salem bin Hamoud Al Azari at the Al Jabal Al Akhdar Police Station under Al Dakhiliyah Governorate Police Command.

"The driver must pay attention and anticipate fellow motorists' mistakes, and be familiar with the emergency exits along Al Jabal Al Akhdar Road, in case of a break down," the officer added.

Al Azari counsels visitors to travel in well-maintained vehicles, fitted with sturdy tyres and equipped with heavy spare parts.

Taking a hike?

Climbing and adventure enthusiasts will do well to familiarise themselves with the hiking routes and terrain, or take along a guide who knows the routes, Al Azari said.

"Trekkers and climbers should be in good health and carry necessary first aid," he added.

Responsible tourism

The officer said that those lighting bonfires may do so with caution, and completely extinguish them before leaving the site.

"This way, an outbreak of fire will be prevented and we can all do our bit for the environment, the basics of ethical tourism," he said.
