Muscat: The Islamic New Year holiday will mostly fall on Tuesday as sighting of the crescent on Sunday August 8, 2021 will not be possible.

The astronomical calculations published by the Department of Astronomical Affairs at MERA showed that the moon will be in conjunction on Sunday at 5:50 pm local time in the Sultanate, and the sun will set at 6:45 pm, and the moon will descend about 12 minutes after sunset 4 degrees away from the sun, at an altitude of two degrees above the western horizon, and its luminous intensity is 0.17 per cent.

Accordingly, the calculations show that the sighting of the crescent of Muharram on Sunday 29 Dhu Al Hijah 1442 corresponding to August 8, 2021 will not be possible. Muharram 1st 1443 will be on Tuesday, August 10, 2021.

The Sultanate's government announced that Muharram 1st will be an official holiday for employees in units of the state’s administrative apparatus and other legal persons and workers in private sector establishments.
