Muscat: Oman marks World Breastfeeding Week from August 1 to 7, the Ministry of Health said on Sunday.

Breastfeeding provides easily-digestible optimal nutrition for babies and benefits the child's physical and mental health right into adulthood. It is also beneficial to the mothers’ health.

This year's theme is ‘’Protect breastfeeding: a shared responsibility’’.

Oman's initiative

In a move towards promoting breastfeeding, the Nutrition Department updated the 1998 Omani Code for Marketing Breast Milk Substitutes. It was issued as Omani Standard Specification for Regulating Classified Products for Infants and Young Children in May by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion to stop inappropriate marketing of breast milk substitutes.

The specifications are based on the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes, approved by the World Health Organisation and UNICEF.
