Oman's Ministry of Heritage and Tourism comppletes ‘Kiva’ ship documentation

Muscat: The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism completed the scanning and excavation phase at the site of the sunken ship “Kiva” off Governorate of Dhofar’s Mirbat coast.

These efforts are part of the Ministry’s endeavour to preserve and document the underwater cultural heritage. The underwater archaeology team dived and photographed “Kiva” shipwreck, to register the site as an archaeological underwater cultural heritage site in the local and regional waters.

The move comes as part of the Ministry’s efforts to document marine-related and underwater cultural heritage. This documentation is among the first and most important projects executed this year in the underwater antiquities sector.

Oman a member state of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage, known as the 2001 Convention, which is considered as the international charter for heritage protection that enables member states to protect and conserve underwater cultural heritage effectively and efficiently.

The Ministry works in accordance with the scientific standards and ethical instructions approved by the charter.
