Celebrated on 12 July annually, World Paper Bag Day aims to make people aware of the pollution caused due to plastic and the serious threat that it poses to the natural environment. Made from renewable raw materials that are recyclable and biodegradable, paper bags certainly help in reducing the environmental pollution.
This year the theme is “eradicate plastic and safeguard earth.” Paper bags are the best alternatives for harmful plastic bags. Paper bags are the best environment-friendly solution to prevent nature from further destruction. The World Paper Bag Day aims to increase the scope of spreading awareness among the people about the importance of conserving nature.
In1852, American inventor Francis Wolle invented the first paper bag machine. In 1870, Margaret E. Knight invented machines which produce square, flat bottomed bags and the machine would fold and paste them. She became popular and known as ‘the mother of the grocery bag’.
Charles Stilwell invented a machine in 1883 which could create square-bottom paper bags with pleated sides making it easier to fold and store them. Walter Deubener used cords in 1912 to reinforce paper bags and attach handles for the carrying. Several inventors came along over the years and improved paper bag production and designs.
