New tome on historic Omani lanes published
The tome contains more than 550 pages, including a large number of photographs

Muscat: The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has inaugurated a new tome that includes engineering and photographic documentation of the most important and endangered Omani lanes.

More than 25 students from the Civil and Architectural Engineering Department at Sultan Qaboos University and a number of researchers, engineers and technicians from the same department participated in the field research.

A statement said: "The Ministry has launched a new tome that includes engineering and photographic documentation and ethnographic studies of four ancient Omani lanes: Qasra lane in the Wilayat of Rustaq, Sega lane in the Wilayat of Samail, Muslimat room in the Wilayat of Wadi Al Ma’awil, Al Khibt and Abs Fort in the Wilayat of Al Khaboura."

The tome contains more than 550 pages, including a large number of photographs and plans, as well as vertical projections of three-dimensional drawings of the various buildings and landmarks documented in the mentioned lanes. The studies included in the book have been completed taking into consideration the international laws and standards approved by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.

In addition to the drawings, pictures and documentary texts of the buildings and landmarks of the studied lanes, it is possible to refer to it to know the architectural, historical and social details of these lanes and detailed plans for the rehabilitation and management of these lanes and their buildings in the future.

The ministry said: "This tome comes as a result of the ministry’s interest in this important component of the Omani cultural heritage, the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has started implementing a project documenting the most important Omani lanes and the most vulnerable to extinction. After documenting ten lanes previously in cooperation with Nottingham Trent University and the British University of Liverpool."
