Over 30 intellectual property requests since start of pandemic in Oman

Muscat: More than 30 requests for registration of intellectual property rights in fields of prevention, sterilisation, disease surveillance devices, treatment methods, protective clothing and other proposed solutions, has been recorded by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP) since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Nidaa Al Tamimieh, a specialist of patent inspection at the National Intellectual Property Office at the Ministry said: "The requests received by the MoCIIP during the past period since the beginning of the pandemic ,were from varied sectors, especially in the health field, in addition to other  sectors such as in technology and communications."

Nidaa clarified that, during the pandemic period MoCIIP has exerted its efforts to address challenges faced by innovators  by receiving and registering applications electronically, which contributed to encouraging many inventors to protect their creative rights.

She further  pointed out: "The statistics for the last five years from (2015 to 2020) showed that applications submitted till the end of 2020, reached to 110 , considered as an  evidence of the Omani society’s awareness about the importance  of intellectual property rights.
