Muscat: Oman is expected to take possession of about 1.25 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, helping the country progress with its mass immunisation drive, said Badr bin Saif Al Rawahi, the Director of Infectious Diseases Control at the Ministry of Health.
About 209,000 doses are expected to arrive every week, with the first batch arriving last Saturday. Priority for these vaccines will be given to government employees, military personnel, and people above the age of 45.
“The Ministry has developed an implementation plan for immunisation for the month of June that includes vaccination of a number of groups,” he said. “These include general diploma students, academic staff supervising the general diploma examinations, and health workers in the private sector who did not receive the vaccine in advance
“This is in addition to basic service providers and employees of military and civil agencies, for whom the vaccination process will start next week," he added. "For other community groups, the vaccination target groups will be expanded to include adults from the age of 45 years and over, from the third week of June onwards. All those who have received their first dose at least 10 weeks ago will also receive their second shot.”
1.1 million doses of the Pfizer and 145,000 shots of the AstraZeneca vaccine will arrive this month.
