Foehn wind phenomenon causes temperature rise in Oman

Muscat: Foehn wind phenomenon has caused the maximum temperature of Muscat Governorate to rise to 40 degrees Celsius during the middle of the night in the past two days, Oman Meteorology said.

A statement issued online by the Oman Meteorology said: "During the past two days, a phenomenon 'foehn wind' occurred, where southwest winds blew from Wadi Samail (a mountainous area) to the coastal areas of the Sea of Oman (Muscat Governorate), causing the maximum temperature of the Governorate of Muscat to rise to 40 degrees Celsius during the middle of the night."

"This phenomenon 'foehn wind' occurs when the winds descend from mountainous areas to the plains or coasts, due to which the winds become compressed when they descend and become hotter and drier at the coast," the statement added.
