Oman record 5-0 win in first game under new coach

Muscat: Oman’s national football team recorded a thumping win under the leadership of new coach Erwin Koeman by beating Afghanistan 5-0 in the Air Marine Cup in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.

The favourable result means Oman are now through to the finals of the tournament.

Goals from Ahmed Kano Mubarak, Raed Ibrahim, Mohammed Al Balushi, Abdul Aziz Al Maqbali and Mussalam Akaak gave the Sultanate a comfortable win over their Central Asian opposition.

The match to decide the other finalist of the four nation tournament will be played between hosts Malaysia and fellow South East Asian nation Singapore. The finals are to take place on Saturday.

Koeman took charge of Oman’s football team in March 2019, having been confirmed as the successor to fellow Dutchman Pim Verbeek, who led the national team to success at the 2017 Arab Gulf Cup of Nations and took them to their first ever knockout stage of the Asian Cup earlier this year.

Koeman is the elder brother of former Southampton and Everton manager Ronald, having worked with him at both clubs, and worked as interim manager at Turkish side Fenerbahce before taking up reins as Oman boss.
