Health Ministry trying to reduce waiting list for surgery

Muscat: The Ministry of Health is making continuous and persistent efforts to reduce the waiting list for surgical operations in hospitals in the Sultanate of Oman.

In this regard, Sur Hospital, represented by the Surgery Department, performed approximately 40 cases of removal of thyroid tumours. Patients were transferred from the Royal Hospital to Sur Hospital in order to reduce the waiting list at the Royal Hospital and as part of the decentralisation process and integration of health services.

Dr. Yahya bin Humaid Al-Masrouri, Director of Sur Hospital, said that in implementation and improvement of the principle of decentralisation in health services, the hospital inaugurated the Thyroid and Endocrine Surgery Unit. This inauguration comes as an achievement of joint cooperation between the administrations of Sur Hospital and the Royal Hospital.

He stated that after the actual activation of this service, more than 50 patients from the governorates of South Al Sharqiyah and North Al Sharqiyah who were registered on waiting list at the Royal Hospital, were received, and provided surgical intervention and medicare was given to more than 70 percent of them in the surgery department at Sur Hospital.

He stressed that the presence of this service in the hospital will contribute to alleviating the pressure on the waiting lists at the Royal Hospital, and making treatment easier for the people of the Governorates of South Al Sharqiyah and North Al Sharqiyah, noting that the hospital is working to provide modern medical services in the Sultanate of Oman.

In the same context, a team from the Ear, Nose and Throat Department at Al Nahda Hospital in the General Directorate of Khawla Hospital performed a number of ear caries operations at Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah.

Dr. Muhammad bin Abdullah Al Rahbi, Consultant Ear Surgery at Al Nahda Hospital in the General Directorate of Khoula Hospital, said that the visit of the ENT team to Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah took three days, where a number of ear bone caries surgeries were performed to reduce the pressure on Al Nahda Hospital in Muscat Governorate and reach visitors in the nearby local hospital for them.

Early operations

For her part, Dr. Abeer Beit Farraj, Head of the Ear, Nose and Throat Department at Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah, explained that the department has prepared a list of cases needing early operations, stressing that this cooperation between the department and Al Nahda Hospital has contributed to reducing the number of cases awaiting this type of operation to zero currently.
