Riyadh: Oman to participate in 45th session of World Heritage Committee meetings

Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman will participate in the expanded meeting of the 45th session of the World Heritage Committee meetings in Riyadh, from 10th to 25th September, 2023.

Oman’s delegation is headed by His Excellency Dr. Hamad bin Saif Al Hamami, Permanent Representative of the Sultanate to UNESCO, and also includes experts in the field of tangible cultural heritage representing the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, Sultan Qaboos University, the Environment Authority , and the Omani National Commission for Education, Culture and Science.

It is worth noting that the Sultanate’s participation comes as a member of the World Heritage Committee since the 44th session, which was held via video conference in China in 2021 after it stopped in 2020 due to the Corona pandemic.

Oman’s membership in the aforementioned committee continues for a period of four consecutive years, during which it plays important roles in discussing the files submitted by a number of member states for inclusion on the World Heritage List, and also provides its opinion in evaluating those files before their final approval. Where the results of examining the files are limited to three situations, namely: accreditation and inclusion, or returning the file to the state to make the required modifications according to the technical opinion of the committee’s experts, or final rejection.

There are 3 classifications of sites that are included in this global list according to the components of the site, which are: either a cultural heritage site, a natural heritage site, or a mixed site that combines the natural features of the site with human intervention, which is a cultural aspect.
