Muscat: Tourism in Masirah Island is set to get a big boost after the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) of Oman gave the green signal for flights to land in the beautiful town.

Travellers had to drive and use ferry to reach the popular island, which is nearly 510km from the capital Muscat, spending nearly six hours.

On Wednesday, Oman’s budget airlines, Salam Air, got the approval for domestic operations to Masirah Island from Muscat.

In an official Twitter handle of the CAA, the authorities said that the “approval of two domestic flights per week to Masirah Island from Muscat has been given to Salam Air.”

The CAA added further that the domestic operations will begin from November 3, 2002.

Masirah is the largest island in the Sultanate of Oman. The rugged terrain of the island and surrounding rough coastline has led to the appearance of many wrecked dhows on the beaches of the island, most of them well preserved by the salt water and intense heat. It is a popular spot for kite surfing, snorkelling, fishing and nature photography.

People usually drive from Muscat to Shannah Port through Sinaw or via Sur before boarding a ferry at the port.
