MELBOURNE: Marvel Stadium is set to host the much-anticipated "Melbourne Meets Modi" community reception, with close to 26,000 people already registering their interest in attending Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's expected visit to Australia next month.
Sources with familiar the planning told The Australia Today that the event is likely to take place on the evening of July 9, although an official announcement is expected jointly from Australian and Indian authorities.
Following extensive security and logistical assessments, Marvel Stadium in Melbourne's Docklands precinct has emerged as the preferred venue. Indian security officials, working closely with their Australian counterparts, are understood to have inspected two potential sites before settling on the stadium as the most suitable option.
The choice reflects both the anticipated turnout and the security requirements surrounding a visit by the Indian Prime Minister. With its large capacity, controlled entry points, strong transport connectivity and experience hosting major sporting and entertainment events, Marvel Stadium is considered well-equipped to accommodate a gathering of this scale.
The reception is expected to be among the largest Indian diaspora events held in Australia since Modi's landmark appearance at Sydney's Qudos Bank Arena in 2023, where he shared the stage with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese before a packed crowd of Indian Australians.
The public registration portal for the Melbourne event opened earlier this month for attendees registering independently of community organizations. According to organisers, registrations will close at 11:59 pm on June 15, while media accreditation details will be released separately.
Community leaders, business executives, students, professionals, cultural organizations and representatives of the wider Indian-Australian community are expected to attend the event.
Although New Delhi has yet to formally unveil Modi's Australia schedule, preparations in Melbourne have intensified, signaling the significance of what is expected to be one of the highest-profile visits by an Indian leader to Victoria.
Organisers are now focused on finalizing venue logistics, ticketing arrangements and security planning ahead of the anticipated July 9 event.
