Oman's Majlis Al Shura session starts on Monday

Muscat: While the country is celebrating the 46th National Day under the wise leadership of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said and as per the provision of the Basic Law of the State and its amendments, the first session of the second annual sitting of the 8th term will start at the Council of Oman premises on Monday under the chair of Khalid bin Hilal Al Ma’awali, Chairman of Majlis Al Shura.
The State Council will also hold its first session of the second annual sitting of its sixth term under the chair of Dr. Yahya bin Mahfoudh Al Manthri, Chairman of the State Council next Sunday.
During its first session, Majlis Al Shura will discuss the statements by the Minister of Higher Education and the Minister of Manpower. It will also watch three presentations, the first of which will be presented by the Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Planning about evaluating the performance of the 9th five-year plan. The second presentation will be presented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries on the food security system in the Sultanate. The third presentation will be on Oman International Convention and Exhibition Center.
During the first session, Majlis A’Shura will be also briefed on the state draft budget for the year 2017, as well as a number of other issues.
During the first annual session of the 8th term, Majlis Al Shura implemented 9 studies and completed 6 draft laws referred by the government and 8 draft laws proposed by Majlis Al Shura. It also revised five agreements.
Within the framework of using its oversight and legislative tools, Majlis Al Shura presented 63 interpellation requests and expressed 15 desires and 142 parliamentary questions throughout 24 sessions during the last sitting.
The standing committee of Majlis A’Shura also held 120 meeting. A number of Ministers also delivered their statements before Majlis Al Shura.
The State Council will hold next Sunday its first session of the second annual sitting of its sixth term. The economic aspect will have priority in the delibrations of the Council during the coming period. This is in line with the Sultanate’s endeavors to diversify sources of national economy, activating non-oil sectors and completing the 9th five-year plan projects, which mark the conclusion of Oman Vision 2020, after which, Oman vision 2040, which is currently being developed in response to the directives of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, will be implemented.
While the State Council’s Secretariat General and its committees were restructured through merging some of them to become five standing committees namely Legal Committee, the Social Committee, the Economic Committee, Education and Research Committee, Culture, Media and Tourism Committee, during its first annual sitting of the sixth term, the State Council held 11 sessions in addition to two joint sessions with Majlis A’Shura to complete a number of draft laws and present seven projects that amend some provisions of the law. These draft laws have been raised to His Majesty the Sultan as per the provision of article No. 58 of the Basic Law of the State. The State Council also referred three draft laws namely the draft law for Anti Money Laundering and Finance of Tourism Law (AMLFT), the draft Omani Penal Draft Law and the Vet Products System for the GCC States. On the other hand, the Council of Oman was opened and Shurufat Magazine, a specialized publication in parliamentary researches and studies were launched.
The cooperation between the government and the Council of Oman, which includes Majlis A’ Shura and the State Council, enhances the national development efforts in the different fields. It also contributes to channeling the energies of the national to achieve the aims outlined by H.M the Sultan. Sayyid Fahd bin Mahmoud al- Said, Deputy Prime Minister for the Council of Ministers pointed out that the cooperation between the government and the Council of Oman is one of the pillars of the constructive national action and that the efforts made are accorded with great interest by the government.
The collaboration of efforts by the government, the Council of Oman and the public will drive the modern Omani Renaissance to wider horizons and aspirations under the wise leadership of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said to ensure better life for the Omani citizen in the present and future in a modern state that ensures his/her involvement and working towards achieving his/her aspirations.
