Oman traffic: OMR 500, jail term for reckless driving

Reckless and dangerous drivers face prison terms of up to two months and fines of up to OMR500, under new traffic laws announced today.
Heftier fines will be implemented after the Royal Decree 38/2016 was issued, regarding amending some provision of the traffic law which was issued on 4 August 2016.
The amended traffic law shows that driving recklessly has been met with ruthless fines and imprisonment sentences.
Article 50 states: Imprisonment for no less than 10 days and a not more than 2 months and a fine of not less than OMR 100 and not more than OMR 500, or either of these punishments, will be given to those who drive fast and recklessly, or dangerously, or risks others’ lives or property in danger, or overtakes dangerously and in a no overtaking zone, or overtaking from the shoulder of the road.
The same punishment is imposed on those who carry out the aforementioned acts and causes another’s illness or prevents him from work for no less than 30 days.
If the act cause an illness or prevents him from work for more than 30 days, the punishment shall be imprisonment for a period no less than 1 month and no more than 4 months and a fine of no less than OMR 100 and no more than OMR 500 or either of these punishments.
If the acts carried out caused death of a person or permanent disability then imprisonment shall be for a period of no less than 6 months and not more than 2 years and a fine not less than OMR 1000 and not more than OMR 3000, or either of these punishments.
Article 50 repeated states: Imprisonment for a period no less than 1 month and not more than 6 months and a fine no less than OMR 400 and not more than OMR 800, shall be implemented for those who drive vehicles under the influence of alcohol or any psychotropic substances.
The same punishment shall be applied if the act carried out resulted in another person’s injury or forced him out of work for less than 30 days.
If the acts carried out resulted in another person’s illness or forced him out of work for more than 30 days, the violator shall be imprisoned for no less than 6 months and not more than 1 year, and a fine of not more than OMR 600 and not less than OMR 1200.
If the acts carried out resulted in death of another person or permanent disability then imprisonment shall be no more than 1 year and not less than 3 years and a fine of no less than OMR 1500 and not more than OMR 3000.
Article 50 repeated (1) states: Imprisonment for a period no more than 1 month and a fine of no more than OMR 300 or either of these punishments shall be imposed on those who drive their vehicle negligently or without awareness.
The same punishment shall be applied if the act resulted in an illness of another or forced him out of work for not more than 30 days.
If the illness or being forced out of work is more than 30 days then imprisonment for no more than 3 months and a fine of not more than OMR 500 shall be imposed.
If the act carried out resulted in death or permanent disability of another person then imprisonment shall be for a period no less than 3 months and not more than 1 year and a fine of not more than OMR 2000.
All amendments in the traffic law shall be implemented 30 days after it being published in the official gazette, states article 5.
