Muscat: The Oman football’s 2016-17 season will kick off with Super Cup on September 8 while the new Omantel Professional League (OPL) will be launched on September 17.
The details of the new football season and schedules of various competitions were revealed by Oman Football Association vice-chairman and Competitions Committee chief Saleh Al Farsi and OPL CEO Sheikh Shabib Al Hosni during a press conference at the OFA Headquarters on Sunday.
According to the duo, the clubs and players registration process will end on September 30 while the second stage of the process will run from January 1 to 28 in 2017.
The clubs that will not comply the rules and regulations set by the Asian Football Confederation will be removed from the OPL and they will be replaced by a teams from first division league.
Meanwhile, there will be some interesting and exciting match-ups in the first week of OPL season including the clash of champions Fanja with newcomers Jalan.
The other matches of the first week, to be played on September 17 and 18, will see Muscat facing Dhofar, Oman taking on Suwaiq, Sohar meeting Saham, Al Nahda playing Al Khabourah, Al Arouba clashing with Al Rustaq and Al Shabab squaring off against Al Nasr.
The second part of the OPL season will start on February 3 next year after the clubs agreed for a break in the league as Oman will be hosting the Military World Cup Football Championship in January.
The OPL season is scheduled to conclude on May 12, 2017.
The Super Cup match, to be played on September 8, will see Fanja taking on Saham.
The officials also revealed that the first division will start on September 18.
