Car rams police van on Paris' Champs Elysees, driver dead

A driver deliberately rammed his car into a police van as it drove down Paris' Champs Elysees and was probably killed, police said, adding that no officers or bystanders were injured and the situation was under control. John Hyland reports.
The Champs Elysees - one of Paris' busiest thoroughfares and moments from the presidential palace and U.S. embassy - again the target of a potential terrorist attack.
A driver - said to have deliberately rammed his car into a police van - ending up most likely dead according to French authorities.
They stressed no officers or bystanders were injured in the incident and that the situation was quickly brought under control.
An interior ministry spokesperson said "it appeared to have been a deliberate act."
French media reported the attacker was known to security services and had been carrying a gas bottle in the car which burst into flames soon after.
France has been on high security alert following a series of militant attacks including the shooting of a policeman on a bus on the Champs Elysees in April, followed in early June by a man with a hammer attacking an officer outside Notre Dame.
Witnesses say he shouted 'this is for Syria'.
