Muscat: The restoration work of Bibi Maryam tomb has begun in the historic city of Qalhat in Wilayat Sur in South Al Sharqiyah governorate.
According to the Ministry of Heritage and Culture: “The restoration will take four months during which a team of specialists will work in accordance with the procedures, standards and guidelines followed in this field in an important preventive measure to ensure its safety and its authenticity, sustainability and stability of the condition of its construction condition.”
In 2018, the Ministry of Heritage and Culture had succeeded to include the historical city of Qalhat on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Bibi Maryam stands apart as a distinctive model in its architecture, which dates back to the medieval Islamic period, which was characterized by the emergence of new forms of buildings that allowed the construction of a dome on a square building, and this type of architecture flourished in Iran and Central Asia during the Seljuk period 1037 - 1194.
