Get compensation if you're unhappy with electricity services, says authority

Muscat: Subscribers will be able to obtain direct compensation if companies do not comply with service level standards, said the Chairman of Authority for Public Services Regulation (APSR).

The Authority’s for Public Services Regulation media meeting reviewed what was accomplished during the year 2023 and the performance of companies operating the electricity, water, sanitation, gas and waste transportation sectors, and revealed upcoming initiatives and projects.

His Excellency Mansour bin Talib Al Hinai, the Chairman of APSR said : "Over the past year, the Authority witnessed many achievements that culminated in the issuance of the Supreme Royal Decree for the Water and Sanitation Regulation Law, which worked to create a legislative system and clear policies."

"Residential and non-residential connection fees have been reduced by more than 70 percent, based on the royal directives. To provide social protection."

"The actual reading rates in the electricity sector increased to 97 percent, and in the water sector to 75 percent , and the working days required to deliver the service to subscribers in these two sectors were reduced."

"The total work assigned to small and medium enterprises in the electricity sector amounted to OMR 22 million, OMR 40 million in the water and sanitation sector, and OMR 11 million in the natural gas transportation sector," Al Hinai added.

Chairman of APSR said :" The Authority for Public Services Regulation launched 4 new initiatives, aiming to improve the quality of services provided to subscribers, enhance energy efficiency, and accommodate the increasing demand for electricity and water services.The first initiative: direct compensation to electricity service subscribers in accordance with the standards for ensuring approved service quality levels, as subscribers will be able to obtain direct compensation in the event that the operating companies do not adhere to these standards.The second initiative: Announcing 5 new stations to produce electricity with wind energy, which are: “Dhofar 2” station with a capacity of 132 MW, Sadah station with a capacity of 99 MW, Duqm station with a capacity of 270 MW, Mahout station with a capacity of 400 MW, and Jaalan Bani Bu Ali station with a capacity of 105 MW.The third initiative: The direct sales project in the electricity market in the Sultanate of Oman, which aims to attract investments, simplify the purchasing process, and increase transparency between the consumer and the electricity generation plants."
